Curly Hair Regimen

Okay ladies! I thought I would share my curly hair regimen with you. First off, I do not wash my hair every day. I find that it is too time-consuming to deal with and frankly shampooing that much is not good for your hair. Every couple of weeks – between “wash n’ gos” and twist outs I dedicate my Saturday morning or Sunday evening to taking care of my hair.

The first thing I do before I jump in the shower is separate my hair into 4 sections (kind of like if you were preparing to get a relaxer). My hair is REALLY thick, and I find this is the most effective way to get it cleansed and conditioned properly.

So I basically switch around from product to product. The one thing I will absolutely recommend is that you use products made for curly hair! There are some very good curly hair products that will instantly detangle your hair:

1. Miss Jessie’s Super Slip Sudsy Shampoo and Crème de la Curl Cleansing Crème (I sometimes use it for Co-washes too)
2. Kinky Curly Come Clean shampoo.
3. Ouidad’s Curl Quencher Moisturizing Shampoo and Curl Quencher Moisturizing Conditioner
4. Silicon Mix Moisturizing shampoo and Silicon Mix Intensive Hair Treatment (their version of a conditioner)

Make sure to use a wide-tooth comb in your curly hair regimenI have used all these products and had great success with cleansing and detangling my thick 4b/4c hair…. YouTube videos soon to come!

My Curly Hair Regimen: Deep Conditioning Treatment

The next step I take is to do a thorough deep conditioning treatment for curly hair. And I have used all of them! The one thing  I stay consistent about is mixing whatever deep conditioner I use with a hot oil treatment. I switch between Jojoba Oil and Kemi Oyl.

1. Miss Jessie’s Super Sweetback treatment
2. Kinky Curly Knot Today
3. Ouidad’s Moisture Lock Leave-In Conditioner
4. Silicon Mix Intensive Leave-In Hair Shine and Conditioner

As part of your curly hair regimen deep treatment, use a shower capI scoop the conditioner, squirt some oil , mix them together and rake it into my hair (my hair is still parted into 4 sections). Once I feel like I’ve applied enough to each section (it does depend on the thickness and length of you hair, so use your judgment), I do a comb-through with a wide tooth comb. Wide tooth combs are CRUCIAL to curly hair. I almost never comb my hair dry because the type 4 curly hair pattern is very fragile and has less natural protection from the damage you inflict by combing, brushing, curling, blow-drying and straightening it. Coincidentally, Type 4 hair is known to shrink up to 75% of the actual hair length – major shrinkage ladies.

Once I’m done applying the conditioner and oil, I place a shower cap on my head. You can use the shiny caps they sell at the beauty supply store for $2, OR do as I do and get a pack of like 20 regular shower caps for $1.49 at Target or another discount chain. I then go under my portable dryer (medium/high setting) for 15 – 20 minutes. Keep a towel around your shoulders because you will leak. :)

My Curly Hair Regimen: “Wash n’ Go” versus Twisting

As part of your curly hair regiment deep treatment, sit under the dryer for a few minutes.I then get back into the shower and rinse out the treatment. This is when I put in a styling product. All four product lines have styling products for curly hair and you can use them for “wash n go” styles. I’ve used Miss Jessie’s Curly Pudding and Kinky Curly Custard for flat twist outs. From what my hair looks like after Silicon Mix and Ouidad dry, I don’t think I will be using them for any twist out style.

When I do a twist out, it usually lasts about 4 to 5 days – as long as I make sure to use a satin cap when I go to bed. My “wash n’ go” hair usually lasts about 3 days max and that is also heavily dependent on using the satin cap or using the pineapple method.

In between washing my hair and doing deep-condition treatment  I sometimes do a co-wash (conditioner wash) and reapply whatever styling product I’m into that week.
