7-Year-Old Ukailya Lofton Mocked by Teacher on Facebook

Chicago Public Schools officials are investigating a teacher who allegedly posted a photo on her Facebook page of student – Ukailya Lofton – who wore Jolly Rancher candies in her hair. The 7-year-old girl’s mother complained to school officials after she saw negative comments written about her daughter’s picture on the page.

For picture day, Ukailya wore Jolly Rancher candies at the end of her braids, a hairstyle she says her computer teacher at Overton Elementary School mocked on Facebook. “She took a picture of me and then she said my boyfriend can’t believe this,” Ukailya told a local news station.

Wow, so I am totally disgusted! I can’t believe that a teacher would do this to their student! Now, I have friends who are teachers and I admit there are times when you want to vent about the crazy stuff they (or their parents) do, but to post it on Facebook??? Not cool at all. Except for an apology from the principal and teacher, no repercussions have been made. I do hear Lucinda Williams (Ukailya Lofton’s mother) is suing both the teacher and the Chicago school district, claiming emotional distress.

Do I think jolly ranchers should be used as a hair accessory? Um… well… I’ll plead the 5th on that one, but definitely 7-year-old Ukailya Lofton did not deserve to be mocked on Facebook for it. What do you think?
