VH1’s Beverly Hills Fabulous – My New Guilty Pleasure!

So last night was the premiere of VH1’s Beverly Hills Fabulous and I for one am excited. Now don’t get it twisted, I love my “Tabatha’s Salon Takeover”, “Shear Genius” and “Hair Battle Spectacular”, but it’s nice to see a show centered around a black-owned salon and seeing a few curly girls in the mix. Elgin Charles owner of the salon is ex-husband of Jackée Harry (I don’t get it but, okay….) and has owned his Beverly Hills salon for 15 years.

According to his website Elgin Charles Salon is a full service hair salon that serves a multi-cultural clientele of professionals and celebrities looking to enhance their appearance with the most fashionable styles, cuts and hair extensions. In the list of services I don’t see any reference to natural hair – although I did spot a few curly girls in last night’s episode: Crazy Syreeta, wannabe assistant to Sean; and un-named curly girl with a LOT of hair and my favorite curly girl, Tanika Ray!

Beverly Hills Fabulous centers around Elgin’s salon and his crazy cast of stylists. Sean seems to be the breakout star and resident DIVA. I am not 100% sure, but I thought he may have said something slightly disparaging about naturals “Don’t call me if you got a whole bunch of natural hair, cuz I ain’t interested.” Hmmmm… Lolita (representing the big girls – her words) and sweet Katrina round out the cast and I can’t wait for future episodes to see how they shine.

Last night’s episode focused on Sean getting an assistant and temporarily hiring crazy Syreeta, who’s cropped curls I am really feeling! Also, the fabulous Tanika Ray’s hair emergency that caused Elgin to lose out on a hot property for his new salon. Elgin didn’t style Tanika’s curls, he straightened it out and added some weave which was a little disappointing, but still cute.
So far I think the show has some real potential, and I am excited to see where it goes. I’m not so sure about the video music feel that channels a Hype Williams video, but I am LOVING the healthy hair tips they are providing after each commercial break. Hopefully we’ll see some more curly girls on the show!

I actually started watching the show on accident and all I can say is that I absolutely love it. So far, my favorite person is Sean, just because he tells it like it is and doesn’t sugarcoat anything to make you like him. I even showed all of my friends because I let them watch the show using the DISH Remote Access app on my phone. I work and subscribe to DISH Network and I use the TV Everywhere function to keep in touch with all of my favorite shows . It’s great to have when you’re on the road and you need a little bit of excitement to help you along with the trip. I use it when I’m not at home for a prolonged period of time and the app is free! It works with the iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad and Android devices. You can also watch pre-recorded or live TV! I am always recommending that people check out DISH Network and I am inviting anyone who comes across this post to explore the endless possibilities with DISH Network and experience a value unseen by any other TV provider!

  2. Sounds like a super fun show! I missed the first, but I’ll be show to catch the second episode.
