The First of Many Kinky Curly Reviews

For the past couple of months I’ve been using Kinky Curly hair products almost exclusively. I just really like how my curls turn out once my hair is dry. Kinky Curly Curling Custard definitely delivers when it come s to giving that “wet” look that in my opinion A LOT of curly girls (including myself) crave. I do have to admit though that I did try the Kinky Curly hair products  a couple of years back with not so great results. Mainly because I didn’t take the following into account:

1. Always remember to look at your curl pattern first!
My hair is very thick, 4b/4c hair.
2. Pay attention to how your hair behaves!
My hair sucks up product like nothing, so I have to use more than what you may need.

On the container itself, it directs you to apply to soaked hair if you have thick/course hair. This is ABSOLUTELY TRUE! Something else I don’t do, is actually come the Kinky Curly  Curling Custard or any styling product for that matter into my hair. I find that this takes away curl definition and it actually encourages frizz.

Step by step instructions on what I do before I apply a styling product are available under My Curly Hair Regimen.

So you can either let your hair air dry or if you’re in a hurry, go under the dryer for 20 minutes or so, under medium heat.

So here is the real test of Kinky Curly hair products… does this look last more than a day?

Short answer yes! Long answer yes with some manipulation.

1. Make sure to use a satin cap or scarf when going to bed
2. Have some sort of pomade or spritz available in the morning to “freshen up” your hair.

I’ve learned the hard way that Kinky Curly hair products, do not play well with other curly hair products. I’ve had flakes and white film all over my curls because of this :( . So as much as it kills me to say this, it’s in your best interest to just get the rest of the product line. I use Kinky Curly Spiral Spritz in the morning to freshen my curls and to stretch out the back (lot’s of shrinkage no matter what product I use). My hair ends up having volume and looks GREAT.

If I am careful every night before I go to bed, I don’t have to reapply the curling custard for 4 days! That’s right you read correctly, 4 whole days! See my 3rd day picture below:

Kinky Curly Hair Product Review Day 2

To sum up, I give Kinky Curly Curling Custard 4 stars, BUT it really depends on your curl pattern and hair behavior.  Also, if you find that you put too much of the product and your hair ends up looking and feeling stiff, the Gloss Pomade is really helpful in softening your curls. Another bonus for using the Curling Custard is that you don’t necessarily have to use the shampoo or Knot Today for it to work. I bought the full product line for this review, but I’ve used it before on its own and  still had awesome results.

  1. Hi Curly Girl,

    Very informative!

I have used Kinky Curly and really like the products. I agree with using the whole line. When I broke down and purchased all the products in the line and used them, I liked the results even more.

    Your hair is beautiful! :)

    Take care,

    Evelyn

WEhen you say you can four days without using more, does that mean you don’t wash it for four days/? I”M assuming if you co-wash every day like me, you would need to apply daily, right?

      • Curly Girl says:

Andrea, I don’t co-wash every day. What I to the first 2 days is either bun it (a high bun with my ends tucked in) and I cover my hair with a satin scarf or cap at night. Then i just undo the bun in the morning and fluff with the spriral spritz or an oil like coconut oil. If my curls are looking less defined I don’t bun the 3rd/4th day. I just reactivate with water (spray bottle) and oil and make big chunky twists that i cover with a satin cap or scarf. If I’m really feeling lazy, I’ll wear my hair in a high pony tail with a thick head band.

I try not to co-wash too often. I don’t really have the time and I actually like to avoid manipulating my hair too much.

I am working on writing a review for my site kinkycurlyreviews.com . How big an issue do you think curl pattern really is for using kinky curly curling custard.

    • Curly Girl says:

@Andrea, very big! What products like Kinky-Curly does is “freeze” your hair’s curl pattern, in its wet state. But if you have no curl pattern to speak of, you’ll just end up with a big poof. LOL – btw, sorry for my late reply! :)
